Whirlow Hall Farm is an Educational Trust which was set up in 1979 by Alan Aikin. Alan grew up in the inner city and was sent to a farm as an evacuee during the Second World War. He was so profoundly affected by his experience of farming and the countryside that years later he decided to set up a centre for all inner city children to come and experience the wonders of the countryside and develop their understanding of where their food comes from.
The farm today: Whirlow Hall Farm is a fully-functioning working farm spanning 138 acres with a variety of livestock (numbers vary from year to year) and growing spaces.
The new Barn Cafe, Shop and Butchers Shop makes the most of everything the Farm produces- it doesn't get more local than this!
The fields that are not used for rearing animals are utilised in other productive ways, including growing a massive 1000 pumpkins for our autumn events and hundreds of Christmas trees for the festive period!
In addition there is a vineyard growing three varieties of grapes: rondo, solaris and phoenix. In 2019 wine was made available to the public in the farm shop, café and for weddings. There are fantastic red, white and rose still wines, as well as white and rose English Sparkling Wines.
Alongside the vineyard is a heritage orchard, with over 50 trees and nearly as many varieties. The apples are used to make cider amounting to around 700 bottles.
Situated in the orchard and vineyard is an apiary, with around 10 hives. The bees are vital for pollinating the fruit crops and they also produce honey which is harvested in Autumn when it is jarred and made available in the Farm Shop
